The Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy is the most prestigious and important distinction awarded by the President of the Republic of Italy, Goergio Napolitano, to Italian citizens who have a particular merit in regard to the nation of Italy.
World-class surgery star Francesco Rubino got special treatment when he joined New York-Presbyterian’s staff.
"Franceso Rubino is a pioneer in the newly emerging field of diabetes surgery. His innovative surgery , the Rubino procedure, which brings diabetes type 1 into long term remission, offers great promise to the millions of diabetics around the world".
Dr. Rubino, Chief of Gastrointestinal Metabolic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, is also Director of the Diabetes Surgery Center at Weill Cornell Medical Center, the first academic-based Diabetes Surgery Center dedicated to the latest surgical treatment, research and education about surgery to treat diabetes type 1.

Noted Italian surgeon, Francesco Rubino, MD (born in Cosenza, Italy), who is Chief of Gastrointestinal Metabolic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, was chosen by Crains New York as one of the city’s top leaders under the age of 40. Crains selected the top 40 leaders under the age of 40 in 2009, culled from thousands of nominations of rising stars in the corporate world, non-profit, medicine, education and the arts.
Dr. Rubino, who was appointed associate professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and director of gastrointestinal metabolic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, has advanced diabetes surgery as an entirely new surgical field—one in which gastrointestinal operations can be performed to directly treat diabetes—not just as a byproduct of weight-loss surgery.
He is the proponent of a novel procedure specifically designed to treat type 2 diabetes. Instead of shrinking the stomach like most approaches to weight-loss surgery, his approach reroutes the small intestine, leaving the stomach intact. In a study published in the Annals of Surgery, he reported that the procedure dramatically reduced diabetes in animals—demonstrating for the first time that surgery has a direct effect on type 2 diabetes unrelated to weight loss. The procedure, now known as Rubino's Procedure, has been performed on patients at several centers worldwide.

Francesco Rubino, MD, is Chief of Gastrointestinal Metabolic Surgery and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is an Assistant Attending Surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Rubino is a world-renowned pioneer of surgery for type 2 diabetes,an emerging speciality which holds great promise for diabetics-- for the first time bringing diabetes type 2 into long term remission. Dr. Rubino is heading up the Diabetes Surgery Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College, the first academic-based Diabetes Surgery Center.

Dear colleagues and friends,
An estimated 246 million people worldwide now have diabetes, a number that is expected to grow to 380 million by 2025. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is the principal reason for blindness among adults. It often leads to cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and premature death. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the disease could lower the average life expectancy of Americans for the first time in more than a century. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that almost 80% of worldwide deaths attributed to diabetes are in low and middle-income countries where access to even basic therapies is limited, yet the growth of the disease escalates at epidemic proportions.
