In many ways most of Italy's bio-nano industry remains still unknown or undiscovered to the US.

Over the past decade, Italy has invested to expand R&D capabilities and implement vital reforms. As a result, it now ranks fourth in Europe in terms of R&D spending and patent registrations. But despite such accomplishments, the phrase “Made in Italy” is rarely associated with bio-nano innovation.

That is why the Italian Trade Commission introduced the Bio-Nano Insider newsletter last Fall. Our goal is to provide news about Italy’s up-and-coming bio-nano sectors, and bring our readers up-to-speed on the latest collaborations and investment opportunities.

In this issue, we highlight exciting new advances such as pioneering research in membrane technology that has the potential to solve many of today’s most pressing environmental issues. Among the latest developments, we also want to stress the recent entry of prominent foreign investors into the Italian life sciences sector, which provides grounds for optimism on the part of the industry’s supporters.

The innovations featured in this issue of the Bio-Nano Insider represent just a small sampling of the excitement permeating Italy’s bio-nano firms and research institutes.

So it’s time to start spreading the news!

Cordially,
Paola Bellusci
Trade Commissioner
